Making room for women in engineering
Engineering is one of the fields shaping the future.
From artificial intelligence and robotics to renewable energy and medical technology, engineers are responsible for creating many of the technologies people use every day. However, women still remain underrepresented in the field. Although more women are entering engineering than in previous generations, they still make up a smaller percentage of engineering students and professionals than men. The good news is that progress is happening, and recent efforts are showing that creating supportive environments can encourage more women to see engineering as a career where they belong.
According to research presented by the American Society for Engineering Education, women made up about 29% of undergraduate engineering students in a recent national analysis. However, women represented only about 17% of the professional engineering workforce in the study. This difference shows that simply getting women into engineering programs is not enough. Engineering organizations and workplaces also need to make sure women feel supported and encouraged to stay in the field.

So why are women still less prominent in engineering? One major reason is the stereotypes that surround STEM careers. Engineering has traditionally been viewed as a male-dominated field, which can influence how young people see themselves in it. Girls may grow up seeing disproportionately less female engineers, computer scientists, or robotics experts, making it harder to imagine themselves having those careers. Research reviewed by the Society of Women Engineers in 2025 found that girls can begin questioning their abilities in math and science at a young age. A difficult class or a poor grade may make a girl believe she is not naturally cut out for STEM, while another student may simply see the experience as part of learning.
Representation matters because people are more likely to picture themselves in careers when they can see people like them succeeding. This does not mean that every girl needs a female role model to become an engineer. Instead, seeing women succeed can help challenge the idea that engineering is only for men. Female engineers working in areas anywhere from robotics to environmental engineering demonstrate that there is no single type of person who can be an engineer.
Another issue is belonging. Engineering programs can be challenging, especially towards the beginning of college. Students are expected to handle difficult math and science courses while learning how to solve complicated real-life problems. When someone already feels different from the majority of people around them, those challenges often become even harder. Creating or seeking out communities where women can meet other female engineering students, find mentors, and receive encouragement makes a major difference.
To that end, organizations such as the Society of Women Engineers have become so important. SWE has supported women in engineering for more than 75 years and currently has nearly 45,000 members in more than 90 countries. The organization provides professional development opportunities in the form of networking, scholarships, and mentorship for students to connect with fellow engineers. Its SWENext program also gives students ages 5 through 18 opportunities to become involved with the engineering community before college.
Recent events show that support for women in engineering is growing. In October 2025, nearly 14,000 women engineers attended SWE’s annual WE25 conference in New Orleans. The event included technical sessions, professional development opportunities, networking, and a career fair where students and engineers could meet recruiters from companies and universities. A gathering of that size demonstrates that women are already making a major impact in engineering. They are not waiting for the field to change before participating in it; they are actively helping shape its future.
Additionally, schools should encourage more girls to become interested in engineering before they reach college. Instead of presenting engineering as only math, science, and complicated equations, the curriculum can show students what engineers actually do. Design challenges, coding projects, and other hands-on activities are what make engineering feel more approachable. Students would then discover that engineering is not simply about getting the highest grade in math. It is about solving problems, creating prototypes, working with other people, and finding better ways to do everyday tasks.
Parents and teachers also have an important role. Encouragement can influence whether a student believes that she belongs in a STEM field. The SWE’s recent research emphasizes the importance of parents, teachers, and mentors providing STEM opportunities and showing confidence in girls’ abilities. Support should begin before students decide on a college major or career. If girls are encouraged to explore engineering when they are young, they are more likely to hone in on their interest in the future.
Lastly, companies have a responsibility to create workplaces where women have opportunities to advance. Hiring more women is important, but retaining them is just as vital. Mentorship programs, professional networks, and workplaces where employees feel respected can help women build long-term careers in engineering. The goal should not be to make women change themselves to fit into engineering. Instead, engineering environments should become more welcoming to different perspectives and experiences.
Increasing the number of women in engineering is not about replacing men or creating opportunities based only on gender. It is rather about ensuring talented people are not discouraged from entering a field because of outdated stereotypes or a lack of support. Engineering as a culture and discipline benefits when people with different experiences approach problems in varying ways. A wider range of perspectives can lead to new ideas, better designs, and technologies that work for everyone.
Engineering is ultimately about building the future. That future should be built by anyone with the curiosity, creativity, and determination to solve problems. Encouraging more women to become engineers does not just create more opportunities for women; it creates a stronger engineering community for everyone.
